"Christopher Columbus was not the first European to discover the New World! This commonly held belief is wrong. Columbus didn't reach the New World until 1492, 500 years after Leif Ericson's arrival in 1001 AD".-By Kevin A. Weitemier Leif Ericson was born in Iceland around 975 but it was possible that he was born in Greenland. Leif Ericson id also the son of Eric the Red. Leif Ericson was the first European to step foot on the New World. He and his family explored the south and west of Iceland, reaching the cost of Greeland. One day he meet a man with whom he was feuding and they started to fight and Eric killed that man. Because of this Eric was banished from Iceland for three years. For three years that Eric was banished from Iceland he was at Greeland learning many things about it. Then when he was allowed back to Iceland he told eveyone about it.- Carl Waldman and Alan Wexler and Kevin A. Weitemier.
Leif Ericson was the first European expedition to the mainland of North America. Leif father was the person who established the first settlement in greenland. Leif Ericson became the leader of this establishment after his father's death. His life was recorded in long Icelandic stories called sagas. About 999, Leif Ericson sailed to Iceland and then northway, where he became a Christian. On their way back to Greenland Leif Ericson rescued 15 victims of a shipwreck. They gave Leif Ericson their cargo as their reward. This cargo, plus the logs, helped Leif Ericson get rich.No one know exactly where Leif Ericson landed on his voyages because he made no maps. - Marvin G. Slind
Leif's great-great-great uncle, Nadod, discovered Iceland in about 861, and Leif Ericson father discovered Greeland around 970-980. After Leif Ericson father died he moved to Iceland to get married. Leif Ericson himself was exiled and outlawed twice himself. "The first time because his slaves caused a landslide that ruined a man's property. The second time, Erik attempted to get a family heirloom back, he and the men supporting this act, were attacked, and ended up murding the man's sons and several of his supporters".-Rit Nosotro When Leif Ericson was 20, he cought the hereditary exploring bug. Much trading occured between Greenland and Norway, because there was a need of more wood in Greenland.-Rit Nosotro
Leif sailed into the sound between the island and the ness, and was so eager to get to land that he ran the boat ashore because the tide was out. Instead of waiting for the tide to come in, they got into a smaller boat, and sailed up a river into a lake. The lake that tey possibaly was sailing on was the Bass river and the Follins pond in Massachusetts. On their way they dicovered that there were trees, salmon, grass, and mild climate, they built sturdy, large houses and began to explore. Leif Ericson divided the group and ordered them to stay together and see what they can explore and expect them to come back before night time. One night, Tyrk, an old friend of Erik the Red and Leif, didn't return with the rest of the group. When Leif and some other men went to go find him, they met him on his way back to camp. Tyrk had grapes in his hand. This is why Leif named this new place Vineland. -Rit Nosotro
Leif and around twenty other men were on a voyage back to Greenland from Norway when they got caught in a storm and accidentally ended up near what is now Canada. When Leif arrived in North America he actually named it Vineland because it had so many grape vines. Also when Leif was in Vineland, (he stayed there all spring) he found grapes, grain, and lumber.Leif’s voyage also helped him to discover many new animals.Leif also made a map of the voyage so he could come back when he wanted/needed to.When Leif’s father was banned from Iceland and had to move to Greenland, It is said that Leif learned to sail at this time. After Leif’s voyage, he came back to Greenland and told many people of the new land he discovered. Also in Leif’s childhood he had a shall (a slave like person), but he treated him like a brother and they did almost everything together. When Leif was only ten, he got a very expensive dagger, which he kept all the time and never lost. But Leif was not an only child, he had two brothers, Torvald and Torstein, and Torvald is famous (but not as famous as Leif).- David Buisseret.
